Chapitre II

Manifeste — MMXXVI

We do not manufacture.
We wait — and then
we compose.

A perfume, for us, is a small architecture of memory. A room you cannot enter, kept upright by resins, roots, and the weather of a particular year in the south of France.

We release nothing until it is finished, and we do not consult the calendar. Some compositions take eighteen months. Some take four winters. All of them, in the end, are quiet.

Damascena rose fields at dawn near Grasse

Chapitre III · Grasse

— A field, at four in the morning

Before the sun,
the rose is colder
and infinitely more honest.

Fifteen kilograms of damascena become a single gram of absolute. It is not efficient. It has never been. It is, however, the only way to speak the truth about a flower.

A single droplet of amber essence suspended in darkness

Chapitre V · La Matière

One drop,
held to the light,
for eighteen months.

Each essence is macerated slowly in neutral alcohol — a period our perfumers call l'attente, the waiting. The molecules unfold. The rough edges soften. What was raw becomes composed.

Chapitre VI · L'Atelier

Five gestures,
repeated slowly,
for a decade.

  1. 01 — La Cueillette

Roses picked in the dark, before the sun disturbs the oil.

  2. 02 — La Distillation

Copper stills, low heat, patience. A thousand kilos of petal for a thimble of soul.

  3. 03 — La Macération

Absolutes rest in neutral alcohol for a year, sometimes four, in oak-lined cellars.

  4. 04 — L'Assemblage

The perfumer composes at a wooden organ of 500 raw materials, without hurry.

  5. 05 — Le Flacon

Crystal blown by hand in Biot, closed by a single wax seal and a numbered card.

Chapitre IX · Correspondance

Letters, seldom sent.
Always considered.

Four dispatches per year — a field note from Grasse, a new composition in confidence, a private invitation to the atelier. Nothing more.

Grasse — Paris — Kyoto — New York
